Abstract:
Biomedical engineering combines engineering principles and knowledge with biomedical sciences to create new solutions in the health care sector. Nanotechnology has evolved over the past few years, revolutionizing this field with interaction at molecular and cellular level, which leads to improved diagnostics and therapeutics strategies. This review summarizes briefly the achievements of these activities concerning the development of materials at the nanoscale, smart platforms for drug delivery and theranostic platforms, which combine diagnosis with therapy. Main applications in infectious disease management, tissue engineering, cardiovascular medicine, and oncology, among others, along with future technologies like AI-based nanorobotic and nanomedicine. The review also discusses the prime benefits of the nanotechnology including the improved diagnostic accuracy, targeted therapeutic approach, reduced toxicity and enhanced therapeutic efficacy. Important topics related to nanotoxicity, regulatory challenges, scale-up and clinical translation are also discussed. Furthermore, this study offers deep understanding of the research gaps and opportunities of the existing work which can be utilized for the integration of nanotechnology and artificial intelligence, bioinformatics and precision medicine. Overall, nanotechnology continues to play a transformative role in advancing modern healthcare through the development of more personalized and effective biomedical solutions.
