Abstract:
Bryophyllum pinnatum (BP-LP) – a Life Plant used as an herbal remedy for various ailments has been evaluated as Cold Rolled Steel (CRS) corrosion inhibitor in Hydrochloric acid environment. Fourier Transform infrared (FTIR) and Gas Chromatography Mass Spectrometry (GCMS) were used to characterize the aqueous extracts of BP-LP to determine its phytochemical content, while gravimetric analysis was done to determine the potency of BP-LP as a green corrosion inhibitor. The results of FTIR and GCMS showed that BP-LP contains phytochemical organic compounds such as - Tannin, Alkaloid, Phenol with functional groups – N - H stretch, C = O stretch, C = C aromatic stretch that contain heteroatoms (O, N, P, ) and conjugated bonds - C = C – H that support the adsorption of molecules on CRS surface. The study on the inhibition efficiency of aqueous extract of BP-LP in the corrosion of CRS in 1 M HCl environment using gravimetric measurement reveal that BP-LP is an inhibitor of CRS corrosion in HCl environment. The study further showed the inhibition efficiency of BP-LP increased with increase in the concentration of BP-LP with a record of 94% inhibition efficiency. The findings highlight the potential of aqueous extract of BP‑LP as a low‑cost, eco‑friendly green corrosion inhibitor for acid cleaning and pickling processes in manufacturing and oil and gas industries.
