Emergence of illegal dumpsites as a result of abandoned inland sand mining pits: A case study of Alimosho L.G.A, Nigeria

Abstract:
The emergence of illegal dumpsites in abandoned sand mining sites presents significant environmental and social challenges, particularly in developing countries like Nigeria. Five (5) abandoned inland sand mining sites were identified. The geographic location and attributes sites were captured for a spatial analysis using Geographic Information System (GIS). The sites were picked based on the severity of the damage to the ecological system. The intensive urban and industrial developments around these areas contributed enormously to the increased demand of sand for building and construction. The research design was systematically planned to describe, record, analyze and report the conditions prevalent and enable the researcher to report on the socio-economic and environmental impacts of sand excavation. The study utilized a descriptive survey research method. Analysis revealed that abandoned inland mining sites will most likely become illegal dumpsites as purported by 197 (98.5%) respondents, breeding grounds for reptiles 177 (88.5 %), breeding grounds for mosquitoes 173 (86.5%), are prone to mosquito infestation 182 (91%), lead to groundwater contamination through infiltration 152 (76%), blocks drainage and causes flooding 159 (79.5%), causes erosion 162 (90.5%), causes landslides and subsidence 176 (88%), leads to difficulty in erecting structures in such areas 182 (91%), leads to loss of revenue for government 185 (92.5%), has negative impact on development 189 (94.5%) and serve as a hide-out to robber, kidnappers and other criminal elements 190 (95%) of the respondents strongly agree and affirm. Abandoned inland mining sites pose significant risks, including becoming illegal dumpsites and breeding grounds for pests, leading to public health and environmental issues. They also contribute to economic losses and hinder development while attracting criminal activities. The overwhelming consensus among respondents highlights the urgent need for intervention and management of these sites.
