Abstract:
Moringa oleifera Lam., commonly known as the "Drumstick tree" or "Miracle tree," is a fast-growing, drought-resistant species of the Moringaceae family, native to the Himalayan foothills of India and widely cultivated in tropical and subtropical regions. It is highly valued for its nutritional and medicinal properties, with various parts: leaves, seeds, bark, roots, and flowers rich in bioactive compounds such as phenolic acids, flavonoids, carotenoids, glucosinolates, and essential vitamins and minerals. These constituents contribute to its diverse pharmacological activities, including anti-diabetic, anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, anticancer, and hepatoprotective effects.
M. oleifera leaf plays a significant role in managing metabolic disorders like diabetes and obesity by enhancing insulin sensitivity and lipid metabolism. It exhibits hepatoprotective properties, particularly in Non-Alcoholic Steatohepatitis (NASH), and has been explored for its potential in treating Polycystic Ovarian Disorder (PCOD), Alzheimer's disease, osteoporosis, and ocular diseases. Its neuroprotective compounds inhibit amyloid aggregation, suggesting benefits in Alzheimer’s management, while its high vitamin A content supports vision health. Additionally, M. oleifera modulates gut microbiota; an aid wound healing, and possesses anti-venom properties. Recent studies highlight its immune-modulating potential, including inhibitory effects on SARS-CoV-2 protease, indicating its possible role in COVID-19 management. Despite its extensive therapeutic potential, further research is needed to establish its bioavailability, clinical efficacy, and standardized formulations. Overall, M. oleifera leaf remains a promising candidate for functional foods, pharmaceuticals, and sustainable healthcare applications.
